4 th June 9am Bees & Butterflies
2 nd July 9am Birds
6 th August – Time TBC Bats
24th September 9am Nuts/seeds/berries
22nd October 9am Fungi
From May to August surveys will take place on the first Sunday of the month. In September and October the surveys will take place on the fourth Sunday of the month. Meet at 9am (with the exception of the nocturnal survey in August). We’ll walk in the direction of the Milepost Café. We expect the surveys will last approximately 2 hours, however this may depend on how much there is to see on the day. You will need a notebook and pen if you want to record what you see and you may also want to take a camera. Please dress appropriately for walking a few miles along the greenway and for the weather on the day.
The idea of these surveys is for people to learn together about wildlife on the greenway; our Wildlife Champions who lead the walks are not experts but have ID guides that can be referred to.
Why do we carry out wildlife surveys on the Spen Valley Greenway? After each survey our Wildlife Champions will enter the information about each species found onto our iRecord database. This information goes to Sustrans’ ecologist to inform our Habitat Management Plan for the route. The information also goes to the local environmental record centre.

If you need to contact someone on the day of the survey, please contact Jill or Linda, our volunteer Wildlife Champions.
