Become a member of Natural Kirklees

When your group joins as members of Natural Kirklees you will get access to:

  • Free public liability insurance cover (certain qualifications apply)
  • Borrow tools free, through our Tool Share program
  • Support and information on best practice through our collaboration with Kirklees Council

Definition of Membership

There are two types of membership for groups – Full and Associate based on different criteria and the roles of the group. We also offer individual membership for those who are not part of a group but have some expertise in the natural world and who are willing to assist other group members. Criteria for Full Membership

For a group to be a full member it must be

  1. One of the following
    • Friends of a Green Space situated within Kirklees (Natural Kirklees was formed as an umbrella organisation for Friends of Groups)
    • A Green Space Management Group e.g., a conservation group / orchard etc
    • A Village or Ward Community Group or Residents Association
    • An Activity Group – e.g., a walking group
    • A Wildlife Preservation Group
  2. Be active within Kirklees and if a Green Space site, either
    • Owned by Kirklees Council and working with their approval and permission
    • If not owned by Kirklees Council, the group must have the landowner’s permission and approval for all their activities AND the site must be freely accessible to all, with an environmental, biodiversity or educational theme.
  3. The group must be a voluntary organisation or a Not-for-Profit Organisation or a Registered Charity.
  4. The Group must have a constitution and have a nominated chair, secretary and treasurer.
  5. The group must be active and not established for a limited timescale.
  6. If relevant, the organisation must actively promote the betterment of the environment and biodiversity of the Green Space or area in which they operate.

Criteria for Associate Membership

Associate membership is either for smaller groups who are not necessarily constituted and who have expressed an interest in Natural Kirklees such as churches, schools, Women’s Institutes etc or larger enterprises who can work with Natural Kirklees for the benefit of its members.  Eligibility is based on the following criteria that the group –

  1. Is providing services in line with Natural Kirklees objectives.
  2. Be active within Kirklees and if a Green Space site, either
    • Owned by Kirklees Council and working with their approval and permission
    • If not owned by Kirklees Council, the group must have the landowner’s permission and approval for all their activities AND the site must be freely accessible to all, with an environmental, biodiversity or educational theme.
  3. The organisation must operate as a voluntary group or a not for profit organisation and must actively promote the betterment of the environment and biodiversity of the green space or provide its services to Natural Kirklees Members at no cost.
  4. The organisation must be active and not be established for a limited timescale

Associate members are able to access the benefits and services provided which include being able to attend the quarterly meetings, have access to members and the skills they can share, participate in the events held by Natural Kirklees, and have access to the tool stores, but are not entitled to participate in the insurance scheme nor to vote at meetings.

Individual Membership

Eligibility for Individual membership is based on the following criteria

  1. The individual will have specific expertise in relation to the environment or natural world OR having served as a volunteer for one of the organisational members (Full or Associate) OR elected by the members as a Trustee of Natural Kirklees.
  2. The individual must live or offer their advice / services within Kirklees
  3. The individual must operate as a volunteer when undertaking activities on behalf of Natural Kirklees.

Individual Members have the same rights as associate members and are not entitled to vote at meetings. The individuals will be insured by Natural Kirklees in their capacity of expert or trustee when acting on behalf of natural Kirklees.


  • The decision to admit new members and to confirm their membership status will be made by the Natural Kirklees Trustees.
  • Membership will terminate in accordance with the member group’s constitution or if the group ceases to continue to undertake their stated objectives or fails to meet the Natural Kirklees membership criteria.
  • Each organisation will be asked to provide contact names and details. Members agree that this information will be held on a single database administered by Natural Kirklees and restricted in circulation to only the Natural Kirklees trustees (in their capacity as trustees) or by agreement of the individuals concerned.
  • Information submitted by each organisation will be posted on the Natural Kirklees website but other than their names the only other information displayed will be with the specific agreement of the organisation and individual concerned.
