Now that the clocks have gone back, it’s hard to ignore winter creeping up on us. But we don’t have time to hibernate!
We’ve been blown away by the generous way in which people responded to last month’s shout out for help so that we could meet our spring bulb planting deadline. In total Clem’s Garden benefited from 19.5 (wo)man days of volunteering last month. What a community! In addition, local businesses, Paxman Landscapes and SJB Recycling Ltd pulled out all the stops to get soil and compost on site for us. Thank you one and all!
The big news is that we’ve managed to build three out of five of the bulb beds; we’ve had 200 tonnes of soil and compost delivered; and the longest bed has been filled and has some narcissus bulbs planted up thanks to a collaboration with the amazing Transformers North (another local social enterprise). This weekend, our aspiration is to finish constructing two more raised beds.
In and amongst this, the work to clear overgrown spaces and bring on seedlings for next year has continued.
We’ve had a great month for grant funding and support too. Vicky has enrolled on The Lloyds Bank Social Entrepreneurs Start Up Programme, in partnership with the School for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE) and jointly funded by the Big Lottery Fund.
And we feel very proud to have been awarded a ‘Bright Ideas’ grant from One Community – the community foundation for the people of Kirklees.
These grants are a huge help, but we have also received many donations from individuals in cash and kind, for which we’d like to say thank you. We are really touched that so many people believe in what we’re working to achieve and reach out to help.
It may sound as though we’re sailing along, but we will still rely on extra hands to help us move the garden preparations forward. There is so much to do!
Over the coming months, we’ve got lots of raised beds to build and fill, seeds to sow, seedlings to prick out, plants to pot on, and lots more clearing work to do. If you can spare an hour or two, we’d love to see you.
For the time being, our regular garden grafting sessions will be Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings from 9.30-1pm
So that we can ensure we’re got enough tools and cake, please email firstname.lastname@example.org or phone Vicky on 07759 620883 if you’d like to come along and join us.
